If the ubiquity of peplum might got you thinking that it is old season, you ought to think again. The late forties and fifties favourite peplum that the mighty Christian Dior introduced to the fashion world took this summer by rage with Peplum here, Peplum there and peplum everywhere. But they're not over yet, its here to stay for even Autumn and Winter. In fact Peplum has taken an upgrade for F/W 2012 with an added peplum inspired hem lines on skirts and dresses, as seen on the runways of Stella McCartney and Ostwald Helgasom. Peplum pencil skirts are also the upcoming season's favourite.
Honestly my first reaction to the Peplum trend was dismissive with the bouts of feminity emanating from this style almost nauseating me. However, I thought of giving it another chance and I spotted a grown-up, stately elegance with a twist of cool on peplums with its structured shape almost like architecture, and immediately the hatred turned to love. Peppered feminity that cinch in the waist and highlight the curves yet adding demure was suddenly hard to resist.
Time for some fitting room action........
I decided to make this weekend productive by ransacking a few stores to find some Peplum in my wardrobe and was genuinely surprised with good options to choose from. So here are some fitting room photos (my crappy phone camera did its best job) - the last picture is of The Row from concept store Le Mill and rest from Zara.
1. When running through the racks I was intrigued by this soothing green peplum pencil skirt and they had quite a few pieces left in the sale section.
3. Next up I found another Zara steal in this peplum black dress (Rs 1990 - non-sale), that gave off a playful, flirty look perfect for a date night with the right accessories (I am thinking old, thanks to Olympic gold fever) and simply be transformed as a workwear with what I am thinking is a bright blazer. It fitted well for my petite frame (armholes right, length perfect and the Peplum cinch sitting right on the waist). I passed on the dress as I didn't want to get swayed away and add another LBD to my closet.
You can find a similar dress on sale at Zara (dress on right) at Rs 1,190 ($29.99 US here), a huge bargain considering it was originally selling at Rs 5,390. The one I am wearing (left) is for Rs 1,990 from the new collection. It is last of the sale left at Zara that might end anytime soon. Not to worry, they have a good selection of peplum in their new season collection as well.
Right after Zara we headed to Le Mill, which I have been dying to go and finally the great day arrived!!! Le Mill is India's first concept store in Mumbai, a rice mill turned to store selling labels like Alexander Wang, Isabel Marant, Anya Hindmarch, 3.1 Philip Lim to name a few. I wouldn't rant about Le Mill here, as the store deserves its own post, but since we're talking of Peplum.....
4. I discovered the very chic and love at first sight Sally Peplum top from The Row (the designer brand of Olsen sisters). So if you're looking for something that you wouldn't spot on the next girl (probability is real low unless you strut in the hoity-toity circles), you have a thing for flawless tailoring and rich fabrics and have a deep pocket then this is what you must pick (approx Rs 22,000). I badly wanted it, but the store didn't have my size, but I squeezed into a smaller one just to show you how it looks. I was also sceptic about the horizontal stripes cutting my length and also the neck sitting too high; I prefer showing off some neck (feels easy and adds height).
The Row has great clothes - they fit to perfection, are exquisitely tailored and uses the finest fabrics. Love the cuts and tailoring, sharp, simple yet giving the perfect shape. And they're great for petite women. The Olsen sisters do know their clothes well.
The Row peplum top is also avilable on UK net-a-porter here (for £280) and at a bargain on a US website at $156 here.
The Zara last of sale got me thinking that you really can get some good pieces during the discount season. It's just too much crowd and chaos just kills my mood for shopping.
Here's my peplum outfit ...........
With a long weekend coming up, you can check Zara and other stores for pepluming.
Happy Shopping

1. When running through the racks I was intrigued by this soothing green peplum pencil skirt and they had quite a few pieces left in the sale section.
This pretty pencil skirt (above) is a steal at Rs 1200 ($20 US, buy here), and tweed-ish fabric can easily be the wardrobe choice for Fall and Winter. I tried it on with this black oversized tee that I was so convinced to buy for my nightwear, but was completely stopped by my friend for being too ghastly. Finding the juxtaposition of the unkempt tee with the very feminine skirt amusing in some funny bone tickle kind of way.
The skirt is in a nice green on a tweed fabric (I've seen an almost similar skirt in black lace at Burberry Prorsum) that would need to be maintained with care. Since my friend bought it, I had to let it off - I really didn't want to be spotted in the same party mistakenly called out as waitress (for the simple reason for wearing the same outfit). The brighter side is since we're the same size, I wouldn't mind borrowing from her in case I want it.
2. But I was not to walk away from Zara without quenching my desire for peplum, and fortunately I spotted this elegant and tailored dressy black peplum top (oh no black again, would be the reaction of some, but I wouldn't pay any heed) with fantasy collar (as the style is called, not by me). It could be seen as a little pricey, but with the good fabric and finish you wouldn't mind spending Rs 3,790 (UK for £39.99 buy here, US for $79.99 buy here) on it.
